Story

Timeline

For the purposes of this story, there are at least two universes:

  • Our world, Earth. This is the "real world." Not a lot of magic here.
  • Gie, an alternate Earth, steeped in magic.

In 1866, a sidhe wizard from Gie finds himself on our world, in Sault Ste Marie. His name is Albraxas.

Unfortunately for him, since Earth isn't a very magical place, his spells are weak or non-functional. One thing his magic does allow him to do is learn the language.

He managed to pose as an immigrant labourer, and to avoid anyone noticing his lengthy lifespan, spent the next several years moving from place to place.

In 1885, he discovered that the window between Earth and Gie only opens on the solstices when the full moon is at its perigree. He unfortunately missed these windows, but armed with this knowledge, knows when the next window will come - summer of 1986. He makes plans to escape back to his world.

After discovering the works of Tolkien in the late 1950s, he successfully managed to integrate into society as "Albert Essex." Albert Essex became a well-regarded fantasy novelist.

But then fate intervened.

In the 1960s, Albert mets Harvey, and fell in love. He eventually spilled the beans to Harvey, letting him know that he's from the world he's been writing about. Sadly, as the years pass, Harvey begins to decline - Alzheimer's. The two move into a retirement home in the site of Albraxas's kingdoms.

Although he's a wizard, there's not enough magic in Earth for Al to cure Harvey. And to make the trek to Gie requires a lot of intense concentration. Harvey might not make it there, and could just be lost.

But Al hatched another plan. He devised a ritual that would give Harvey a new body - in Gie. This ritual has a few flaws:

First, it requires 4 additional subjects, one representing each of the classical elements.

Second, because Al needs to sustain the ritual, he will not be able to travel to Gie until the next window, 13 years hence.

On the bright side, none of the subjects of the ritual need be aware of it. As long as the conditions are right. And since it mainly requires his concentration, Harvey will be safe.

And Al has the perfect condition: he is running a roleplaying game set in Gie. His players are all members of the retirement community where he and Harvey live. They have unwittingly crafted their new bodies in the form of the characters they have created - and during a game, they will be in the right mindset, imagining themselves as their characters.

Gamesmaster: Albert Essex (Albraxas)

  • Arms: Lester Finch (Luther) - Dilettante
  • Mentalism: Harvey Franks (Korrigan) - Lawyer (who did theatre in his spare time)
  • Subterfuge: Eunice Braunstein (Lara Zane) - Civil engineer
  • Essence: Mike Holmes (Sherlock) - Computer programmer
  • Channeling: Muriel Rosenberg (Agatha) - Nurse (before marriage) + Housewife + Teacher (after kids left home)
  • Luther is a fighter, and a human.
  • Lara is a rogue, and a dwarf (half-ettin).
  • Sherlock is wizard, and a goblin (half-orc).
  • Agatha is a cleric, and a sidhe (half-elf).
  • Korrigan is a pooka (changeling).

---

  • Muriel was married to Joel, who died.
  • Mike was married to Vera, who's passed.
  • Eunice never married.
  • Lester has a string of ex-wives.
  • Harvey's bisexual; Albert is his partner.

'Pangledon' is a word that means 'the Greater Seaside.' It describes the area of Great Lakes Basin in Gie. Kairos is the dragon that lives in the area, hidden and manipulating events through an Elf agent of his, Werra.

Around 11398, a great queen Dualla Kelligar rose in the eastern areas of the Pangledon. Through diplomacy and conquest, and with the assistance of her great-uncle, the wizard Albraxas, she began creating an empire.

Kairos noticed this, and began influencing a warlord in the northern areas, Vothug Bolond.

It was 11430 when Dualla's republic met Bolond's empire. The battle of Bolond raged in 11451, when both fought over the small barony of Batigong.

Before the battle, Kairos arranged for Albraxas to be 'lost'. He exiled the wizard to Earth, a world he knew was bereft of magic. Albraxas showed up on Earth in its year 1866. He ended up in Saul Ste. Marie.

Meanwhile, in Gie, the disappearance of Albraxas left a power vacuum. Ginevra was weakened. She, and those loyal to her, fought valiantly, but in the end Soren is where her Empire fell.

Vothug forced Ginevra to marry him, by sword, to seal their alliance. He chose the family name Pangledon to signify his new dynasty.

Vothug chose the barony of Batigong to be the new capital of his empire, as not only was it the site of his victory, but also it was central to the area.

They had two children: Bolond the first born son, Tarona the second born daughter.

The year is now 11550 (or AD 1983). The political situation is ?????

How the ritual works:

five participants are needed, one for each element:

  • Lester is fire
  • Eunice is earth
  • Mike is air
  • Muriel is water
  • Harvey is ether

Each participant needs to picture the desired end result - in this case, the roleplaying game setting is enough. Their characters and prior play provide the template.

result:

Each participant's body is discorporated, dismantled, then reincorporated in the new world, in the form of their imagined avatars (in this case, their roleplaying characters). This provides raw material.

Each participant's mind is held during this process, and integrated into their new avatars. Memories appropriate to the skills their characters should know are also integrated into their psyche.
