Island Diplomacy

Island Diplomacy

This is a variation of 7 Island Diplomacy that I think addresses some issues I see in it.

  1. The 1971 rule book applies except where amended below.
  2. Iceland (Ice), Ireland (Ire), Corsica (Cor), Sardinia (Sar), Sicily (Sic), Crete (Cre) and Cyprus (Cyp) are added to the map. Also, North Africa (Naf) is split into Morocco (Mor) on the west, and Algeria (Alg) on the east. The southern half of MAO is split to become the Southern Atlantic Ocean (SAO). Spain's north coast touches MAO, its south coast touches SAO. Portugal touches them both.
  3. Morocco is adjacent to SAO, WES, Spain and Algeria. Algeria is adjacent to Morocco, WES, and Tunisia. Iceland is adjacent to NAO and Nwg. Ireland is adjacent to Cly, NAO and Iri. Corsica is adjacent to GOL, Ty S? and Sar. Sardina is adjacent to GOL, Cor, Ty S? and WMS. Sicily is adjacent to Ty S?, Nap and Ion. Crete is adjacent to Ion, Aeg and EMS, and has land bridges to both GRE and SMY. Cyprus is adjacent to EMS.
  4. There are 7 new supply centers: Morocco, Tyrolia, Iceland, Ireland, Sardinia, Sicily, and Crete. The other new spaces (2 islands, one ocean, one land space) are just spaces.
  5. Venice is not a part of Italy. In exchange it starts with Sicily. Italy starts with F Sic, F Nap, A Rom.
  6. Austria has A Tri instead of F Tri.
  7. There are now 41 supply centers, an odd number. The victory condition is 21 supply centers.

Changes for next iteration:

  • As it is the Supply Center of a power, rename Sicily as 'Palermo' (PAL) - an important city on the island. Also two changes that will not alter abbreviations: Venice now Venizia as it is not an SC any longer. Tunis should be Tunisia since it is a non-power SC.
  • TYR no longer a supply center - this was a stupid idea, in retrospect.
  • Syria has been renamed Damascus (DAM) and is a Turkish SC. At the same time, Smyrna has been renamed Konya (KON) and is no longer a Turkish SC. This flip-flop makes it more difficult for Turkey to establish a dominant position in the southeast corner of the map. The Turkish army that formerly started in Syria now starts in Damascus.
  • Add Bay of Biscay (BOB), going from Northern Spain to Brest. It does not border ENG, but does border SPA, BRE, GAS, and MAO. SPA still borders MAO on the north, as well as BOB; Brest also still borders MAO. Also add the Malta Sea - draw straight down from the tip of the boot. ION no longer touches TUN, PAL, or TYS. Malta Sea borders TUN, PAL, NAP, ION and TYS. Finally, add the Hebrides: draw a line from Ireland north to Iceland, slice off everything in NAO east of that line, as well as the triangular area in NWG. Cly and Lvp both no longer border NAO, and Edi no longer borders NWG - instead they border the Hebrides.
  • Also combine NAP and APU - it is now just NAP. Thus, NAP additionally borders VEN and ADR. This gives Italy a Supply Center on the Adriatic. Between this change and the previous change, redraw the borders in Italy until they look nice - but the borders themselves shouldn't change, just the aesthetics.
  • As Venice is now Venizia, tensions between Italy and Austria due to adjacent home S Cs?, traditionally considered their biggest weaknesses, are gone. With each having a coast on the Adriatic, they are not necessarily completely at peace.

1901 Considerations:

  • England: The biggest worry on this map, in 1901 England can grab Ireland and Iceland uncontested, and usually can count on Norway as well. Of course if England does this, that makes it more difficult to get any kind of hold on the continent in 1902; England might let these easy morsels sit until the second year.
  • France: England's additional temptations in the north make her more unpredictable with the Low Countries. Since Morocco can potentially belong to France in turn 1, Africa might suddenly be a bone of contention.
  • Germany: England's northern temptations change the situation in the Low Countries for the Kaiser as well; additionally, Switzerland bordering both Munich and Marseilles gives Germany and France good reason to want a say in its dispensation. With Venice no longer a supply center, the home centers of Italy are no longer in easy reach.
  • Austria: Trieste no longer bordering an Italian supply center gives Austria a bit more breathing room - but not much. With its 3 armies, Austria could make a more concerted reach for the Balkans.
  • Italy: Now beginning as a more naval country, surrounded by tempting choices (Crete, Sardinia, and Tunis all now available on the first turn) combined with the easing of Austrian tensions, Italy has a stronger position. But they now have to deal with the question of Switzerland. Tunisia is theirs - but with Morocco available in the first year, now the French have reason to occupy Africa as well.
  • Turkey: Crete is right there for the taking, but Italy might try getting there first. With Austria less worried about Italy, the Balkans will probably be more of an issue.
  • Russia: With England's options more open, Russia may be more tempted to march north to take Norway as well as Sweden; especially since the extra Austrian Army might make the Balkans less secure.

A considered, but rejected, change, that the author still likes:

  • In Turkey, SMY is cut in half - its eastern area is called Adana (ADA), and borders EAS, ARM, SMY, ANK, SYR, and the new zone Persia (SMY only will border AEG, EAS, CON, ANK and ADA). And what is Persia (PER)? Persia is the eastern half of ARM combined with the northeastern third of SYR and as much of SEV as it might take to look pretty - it borders SEV, ARM, and SYR. It is a Supply Center. This makes any land war in the East between Russia and Turkey more interesting.
  • Note: If this change is ever to happen, another SC must be added on the map. The author is adamant about having an odd number of Supply Centers on a map. Also the author feels this would not work well with the Turkey flip-flop, where Syria becomes Damascus.
