From the Ashes: Lasia's Tears

Having been broken apart, the remaining fragments of Logrim have lost their fire. But there were survivors, clinging to the pieces, eking out a life.

More survivors came from skyships too broken and damaged to make the trek to Taros. Finally, the moon Eris, which had been colonized before the disaster, remained almost completely untouched - its cities were mostly below-ground. The other moon, a water moon named Kali, had been sparsely colonized, and took much more punishment.

It became clear that the idea of reestablishing a link to Taros was untenable - there was a complete lack of available resources. Survival became the watch-word for all of the Tears. Life on Eris was a veritable paradise in comparison to the subsistence living that took place on the fragments of Logrim, the 'Tears'.

Beleth was the first deity to discover that there was still life in the Tears, but for the longest time she kept it her personal secret, a playground where she could delight herself in life living on the edge. Beleth claimed the moon Kali for her own.

There was a disaster, and one of the Tears fell from its orbit and collided with the sun. This brought Lasia's attention to the fact that there were people in the Tears. Lasia felt responsible, and so, against Beleth's wishes, devised a plan to help the people.

And so, Lasia went to the planet of Arrulant, and dismantled it. As it was a gargamel, Lasia had air and water to fill the Tears, allowing water to be more easily distributed in the ring. Lasia also took the seventeen moons of Arrulant, shattered them, and arranged their fragments, giving the people of the Tears more room to grow.

This is when Beleth, and her followers and children, disappeared from Taros. They settled on Kali. Beleth still maintains a presence on Taros but considers the Tears her home.

The only oddity to Lasia's intervention was that the wilderness that once inhabited Arrulant - a collection of creatures that had lived without the need to have ground, or even a perch - was introduced to its collective. This, again, piqued Beleth's interest, quieting her objections.

Lasia's meddling restored some parity between the haves (Eris) and the have-nots (those people living in the Tears, who just had their available land increased by tenfold, as well as additional access to animals and plants that definitely did not exist on Eris).

The nomadic Hezars travel paths that take them between the Tears and Taros. They have remained the only link the Tears have had with Taros.

Not all the Kith can be found here:

  • Dragons (and Naga) can be found here
  • Takan can also be found here
  • Great Spiders certainly live here
  • Urgoi can be found here, as can Dolphins
  • Trolls have been found here
  • The Outsiders have managed to find their way here

Size: 940 million kilometers in circumference. That's 23,500 times the circumference of the Earth. Since it takes 80 days to circumnavigate the Earth, it would take 1,880,000 days to circumnavigate the Tears, which works out to 5,147 years.

With the fragments of Logrim, as well as the fragments of the 17 moons of Arrulant, the available land is almost 100 times what Logrim had before.

Eris orbits on the inner radius, and moves slightly slower than the fragments. A fragment usually enters Eris's neighborhood 100 years before it leaves. Kali, meanwhile, moves slightly faster than the fragments. So, relatively, Eris appears to be falling behind (moving to the right when facing away from the sun), while Kali is moving forward (moving to the right when facing towards the sun).

In the thousand years since Lasia set this up (placing Eris and Kali opposite each other), Eris and Kali have drifted perhaps three year's travel apart (one day per year).

It would take around 50,000 years for Eris to finally pass by all of the fragments - there are many inhabited fragments that have never seen Eris in their sky. It would take a similar amount of time for Kali to pass by all the fragments.

Fragments spin, but not in a 24-hour cycle - this makes timekeeping, especially between fragments, troublesome. Most fragments we will focus on have inherited timekeeping from the colonies of Eris, which in turn inherited their timekeeping from Logrim.

Living in the Tears:

There's no lakes, rivers, or other obvious water system. Instead, there are storms; the collection of water is vital to survival, as weather events are pretty much the only source of water for the inhabitants.

Water has become symbolic of wealth.

Baths are luxuries - most people simply rinse their bodies with washcloths, taking up only about a gallon of water.

Directions

facing the sun is 'east', away from the sun is 'west'. "spinward" is the direction that the fragments travel around the sun. "antispinward" is the opposite.

Winds travel spinward "above" the ring, and antispinward "below" the ring.
