Lycanthropy

Lycanthropy

Lycanthropy is a disease that came from ancient Logrim. It has no cure, but there are ways to mitigate it.

It becomes active whenever there is a full moon in the sky. Other than that, it can also become active when the polar lights are visible, during solar eclipses, or at any other astronomical variation.

When in its active stage, lycanthropy is highly infectious - able to be transmitted through almost any bodily fluid, from saliva to sex. Even kissing a lycanthrope (as the infected are called) can transmit the disease. It is also infectious during the day, between bouts of activity.

Even when inactive, lycanthropy is passed from mother to child.

Furthermore, when in its active stage, it induces a bodily transformation on the part of the lycanthrope. The transformation is always into an animal of some sort, but this varies depending on which of the Races has been infected.

  • Avalir turn into griffins.
  • Darrow turn into bears.
  • Humans turn into wolves.
  • Khan turn into boars.
  • Rakshasa turn into tigers.
  • Vana turn into sharks.

At the start of the active stage (usually when the moon is still peeking over the horizon), the lycanthrope changes into a twisted half-form. During this transformation process, the lycanthrope loses a goodly portion of their mental faculties. They are mostly dangerous and aggressive during this process, when the moon is on the horizon. Also in this horizonal form, they possess great strength and superb stamina.

Once the moon is fully in the sky, the lycanthrope will have turned completely into its target creature. At which point it is no more dangerous than any average member of the species that has been perturbed. Despite lacking any mental faculties, lycanthropes in their animal form have been shown to recognize people from their regular life.

History of Lycanthropy

Lycanthropy was adapted to Logrim, intimately tied to its moon. Back then, lacking a cure or any sense of control, lycanthropes were either exterminated, or allowed to live in very controlled ghettos within a city.

When the Circle of Nations ventured into the ether, and discovered the moonless Taros, they realized that they could send their lycanthropes across the black, supposing that on Taros, they wouldn't transform at all.

The only snag in this process was being in the space around Logrim, which always included a full-shining Eris. Lycanthropes always transformed during this process, but were otherwise "normal." By shipping all cases of lycanthropy away, the Circle of Nations managed to eliminate the disease from their world.

Once landing on Taros, lycanthropes managed to live their entire lives without changing. Since the disease was only passed between mother and child, and never manifested, it all but died out. The disease was mostly forgotten, except in myths and historical records.

Then the light from the exploding Nonlemor arrived, Logrim was shattered, and Kelytos was assassinated. And for the first time, lycanthropes transformed to the light of Nonlemor's explosion, which lasted for a day.

Many lycanthropes discovered they kept their wits about them during the transformation. After their transformations, they sought out new methods to activate the change, seeing the potential good in it. It was the god Thanakae, eventually, that provided the orison to allow these lycanthropes to activate the change.

Eventually, these progressive lycanthropes became the most favored troops of most of the nations of Taros. Their battle prowess was well-regarded, and as they mostly transformed in battle, they mostly spread lycanthropy in that manner. However, as they used orisons to Thakanae to change, they grew more like that god.

Zareth's arrival changed all that. He positioned his body - the moon Eloi - between the Sun and Taros. From that point, until the present day, a total solar eclipse happens every day. However, like in our universe, the eclipse only traces a small path along globe.

In the penumbra, only partial transformations occur. When the sun is completely blacked out, a complete transformation occurs.
