Twisted Confessional | Jastivad

Gran Kerilax

The largest inhabited canyon in Jastivad.

Shaped like a Y, with the 'bottom' touching an ocean.

 "It's, like, really, really big."
 - Mike Holmes
  • Length: ~5,000 miles
  • Depth: ~4 miles
  • Width: ~50 miles average (100 max)

Dominant political body: Kerilax Commonwealth

  • Total population: ~15 million
  • Largest city: Nyneveh (65,111pp) 1073 acres (about 1.676563 sq miles) - at the 'bottom'
  • Capital: Asho Themar (39,023pp) 643 acres - at the junction

Nyneveh

On one end of Gran Kerilax, where it meets the ocean. It abuts an Ocean Strand, a miles-high portal to the ocean visible from most of the city. The Strand glows with a light about as bright as the full moon. A high wall (800 feet long) protects it from the rest of the canyon. The city lives between the Wall and the Strand in a strip of land about 11 miles long.

It is almost a straight shot from the Wall to the Strand; the canyon walls here are almost vertical.

There are "bridges" that stretch across the canyon, like this:

There are several key districts:

The University District

Between the Wall and the Marina...

Surrounding Dorok University, which has an egalitarian mission. It claims to open its doors to everyone, though it's rare to find a student without elven blood. Sure, there are some token dwarves, humans, or half-breeds. Sometimes, they even let in an orc or two. The City Government and the University have reached an understanding - the University polices its own.

The Marina District

Nyneveh is built near an Ocean Strand - the Church of Nyx makes its presence there and operates a Marina out of its basilica. Its submersibles bring cargo from other oceanfront cities. The Church of Nyx is welcoming of strangers and foreigners, so this is a district filled with refugees and others that are down on their luck.

The Wall

Protecting Nyneveh from the rest of Gran Kerilax is a large wall wide enough for a street lined with houses. This is where the government buildings exist, including the City Watch.

The wall is 800 feet long from wall to wall, 750 feet high. At its base it is 600 feet wide, its crest is 80 feet wide.

Two cableways, along the edge of the canyon, bring passengers in large enclosed cabs up to the Wall. It takes about 3 minutes to travel. Each car is scheduled to leave every ~20 minutes, or when at full capacity.

There is no reason why the city needs a wall like this - no beasts are even close to that size. Sure, the wilderness is dangerous. But the elves of Kerilax built it to suit their egos.

The Eaves

A district protected by the Wall, and running along the wall's base, the Eaves are where the noble families have their estates. The most prominent families have their estates sunk into the Wall. Other lesser noble houses (of the 250+ in the city). Perhaps 1 in 5 of the members of any noble house is elven - the others are all half-elven.

The Rims

The neighborhoods on the edge of the University District and the Marina District, often abutting against the walls of the canyon. These are commercial zones, relatively clean.

The Arena

The Lantalhinn Coliseum extrudes from the canyon wall, half inside the earth, half outside it. Above it is a cascade, a waterfall made up of the rivers of air that flow on the surface. It evaporates before reaching the ground, creating a sensational view for those seated in the Arena. The Arena is used for gladiatorial fights, circuses, theatrical performances and other public spectacles.

The Arena District is basically an Entertainment district. Gambling houses, brothels, all sundry can be found here.

On each side of the district are two competing theatres: the Coron and the Meril.

The Padarath

An 11-mile long esplanade that travels from the tunnel through the Wall, through the University, and terminating at the Marina. Storefronts of all kinds can be found there, along with street vendors.

It is lined with trees known as Mallorn. These glow with a red light that creates an interesting contrast with the Ocean Strand.

The Tharlond

The skyways, the bridges are the seediest parts of town, where the criminal elements like to hang out.

The City Government is entirely elves or half-elves. The City Watch is almost entirely half-elven, and are the only ones legally allowed to carry firearms besides the elven nobility.
