Faz Tarloc

Faz Tarloc

Faz Tarloc may be notable mainly for his part in the battle of doomspire, but that overlooks the rich history of a great hero. Faz spent most of his life as the champion and defender of Phodrilon. These years of service saw him engage in many of the most intense battles of that age, and his wars stories were collected by an unknown scholar at some point. This collection is popular reading among young warriors and the adventurous of any age, but the validity of it can no longer be confirmed as many different versions exist and no original to speak of.

He is also one of the few survivors of Gorm Fever, a testament to his strength of mind and body. He escaped the fever without any signs of mental deterioration or dementia, and spent a few years rebuilding his strength. Most this ordeal is detailed in many accounts of his collected adventures and some seem more plausible than others. Regardless it is confirmed he survived the fever by no means other than his own strength and will, and lived a long life afterwards though he still bore the marks of the fever on his skin.

Faz only died in the summer of '69. By that point, his thinking was so high and abstract and complex that it was only with effort that he could communicate (or that his listeners could understand him). I wonder if the lofty heights of his intelligence could, perhaps, have been another (rarer) manifestation of the nervous degeneration that is common with the fever.

It's rather assumed that Faz reaped the benefits of Gorm Fever - the augmented intelligence - without later suffering from the severe nervous degeneration that often comes at the end of the disease's cycle.

I wonder if it was simply his strength of will, or if it happened to be a quirk of his lineage: His grand-daughter, Giahlynn Of Phodrilon, apparently went through Gorm Fever as a child - and even retains the signature marks of the fever. Her survival points to perhaps a deeper involvement of his blood and heritage.
