Ghost Cane

Ghost Cane

Ghost Cane is a tough, fibrous plant that grows along the lowlands of the Great River. It is easily recognized due to the silvery-grey coloring of its exterior and blue leaves. This quick-growing plant typically reaches heights of approximately sixty hands and about one hand in thickness. The cane is harvested during various stages in its growth cycle, depending upon the intended use.

While harvested for use as a building material, for both housing and river-going vessels, the cane is also prized for the perception altering substance that collects inside the hollow cavity of the plant's woody trunk. This substance is where the plant gets its name and not from its "ghostly" hue. Common among the villagers native to the Great River lowlands is the notion that they can see spirits while under the influence of Ghost Cane.

The leaves of the plant also possess mind altering effects, although not nearly as potent as those caused by the substance taken from inside the plant. Due to the mild euphoric state one can enter from chewing upon the leaves it is not uncommon for entire villages to be in a semi-constant low-level altered state of awareness.

It has been suggested that the ruling power of the Mage-Lords of the Great River Conclave is due in large part to the suggestible state of the populace. The outland barbarians that raid the northeastern reaches of the Conclave point to the regular use of such a substance as a sign of the decadence and weakness of the Mage-Lords.

The magical practice of phanerothymancy depends on substances like the Ghost Cane, as it relies on altered states of consciousness.
