Great River Conclave

Great River Conclave

The Great River Conclave refers to both the gathering of Mage-Lords that rule the city-states along the Great River, and to the land that they lord over in aggregate. The conclave gathers every nine years to appoint a new Mage-King to lead the entire conclave. The process of this appointment is not thought to be democratic, and assumed to involve byzantine rules known only to the Mage-Lords themselves.

The current Mage-King has been in power for eight cycles, the longest since the conclave first convened. This individual was long ago referred to as Lurmak Of Phodrilon, but this is forgotten to all but sages such as ourselves, and most of the world simply refers to him as the Mage-King.

The city-states of the Conclave are decadent and would soon fall to barbarians from the outlands, were it not for the power of the Mage-Lords, which are feared by all. Why their King has decided to devote his most erudite servant to producing articles for this encyclopedia for the Trasumanar University is beyond the understanding of this author.

    -Elix Scarredbrow

Your disapproval of the glorious kingdom of Dagroian notwithstanding, Elix, you must know why Lurmak, in his exalted wisdom, assigned his Keeper to the compilation of this codex. The Mage-King was the biggest patron of the Trasumanar University at its founding, and continues to hold a place on its governing board. Knowledge is power, and it is that power that needs to be collected if we are to forestall the doom foretold by Gaz the Dark that not only hangs over Dagroian, but over all of Yulari.

 -Baron Nortelrye

The lowlands along the Great River produce a superior grain of rice as well as the tough, silvery-skinned plant known as Ghost Cane. The cane being a superb building material for shelters and certain types of river vessels.

 -Sasha the Red

In almost all city-states the title and authority of Mage-Lord passes to the most capable mage in the traditional family at the time of the previous Mage-Lord's passing (with a recognizable bias toward male inheritance). In the south, however, selection often goes to the most capable mage available, regardless of descent. (Though in several cities with the caveat they must marry into the ruling family.) In the north, on the other hand, there are a few cities where the title of Mage-Lord is separate from the authority of the ruling family, culminating with Xarandor and its yearly bloody mage fights to select the Mage-Lord for the upcoming year.
