Yulari Calendar

Yulari Calendar

The Calendar comes out of the Freebooter Strongholds, whose knowledge of Astrology allowed them to reconstruct the measure of time from the start of the world. Thanks to their association with Evermoon, their Calendar has propagated throughout the known world.

It's best to understand the Calendar from the smallest units: the day, the time from dawn to dawn. Following the solar zodiac, there are thirteen subdivisions of 28 days each, one for each sign. These are the houses. Along with the houses, there is Mara, a single "empty day" that falls between two signs, considered inauspicious, and always on the winter solstice. This marks the change of years.

The two moons take 17 days and 23 days, respectively, to traverse the heavens. Only once every 391 years do both of them reach the height of fullness on Mara. This marks an Epoch.

Five Epochs make an Age. The reasons for this are some sort of strange association that only astrologers really understand, but it has something to do with spots on the sun, which have an intriguing cycle that only matches up with an Epoch once every five years.

Since the start of Yulari, the world has gone through eleven Ages: we are in the third Epoch of the Twelfth.

Dates are written as follows:

12.3.73(.x.y) - this is today's year. When necessary to focus below a year, the parentheses are filled in. x and y are filled in with the months and days (or for Mara, only a single .0).

When talking about years within whatever is their current Epoch, often people simply use the notation: '73, only giving the # of years within the Epoch.
