Character Structure, Advancement, et Cetera (assuming a fantasy setting)

A starting character chooses a few simple things:

  • Race
  • Culture
  • Training

Race gives no skills, but some intrinsic abilities, never able to be changed. Culture grants some smattering of skills and a starting location. Training grants more starting skills. Skills are given ranks - all starting skills start with 1 rank, unless a skill appears in both Culture and Training, in which case it gets 2. These are all general skills, available for anyone to learn.

Once a character has started play, they earn levels. Each level gives them one skill rank - which can be used to either increase an existing skill, or to open up a new one.

There are three kinds of skills:

  • General - these skills, anyone can learn
  • Restricted - some people can't learn these skills, but most can
  • Exclusive - these skills belong to a 'class' and can only be learned by refusing all the other classes

There will be a large collection of non-exclusive - one can get through the entire game, ideally, with only general skills, and the occasional restricted one thrown in for good measure. But the exclusive skills - the "class" skills, are worthwhile, they make the game easier than playing as a JOAT.

Effectively, each class has 'levels' as well - we call these Circles, since they're somewhat ritual in nature. One earns these Circles separately from character levels, and generally at a much slower pace, requiring arcs of quests to be completed. Each earned Circle grants a new skill.

The first skill of each 'class' is restricted - they can be learned by anyone who isn't a MEMBER of any particular class, yet. They give a taste of each class, somehow, and are foundational, the kinds of skills class members fall back on throughout their whole career. Skills beyond that require membership - they don't ask you to drop any of the other restricted class skills you've learned, but you won't be able to learn any new ones.

(Yes, this means you can kind of 'game' the system by waiting until later to pick up all the restricted skills you want)

Asikat

Asikat is an artificial biological agent analagous to certain viral agents, created using advanced nanotechnological techniques. Since its introduction to Earth's biosphere, it has proliferated. Conflicting research suggests that, in 2005, it had infected anywhere from 1 in 6 to 1 in 5 people on the planet.

In animals, Asikat is a benign infection, augmenting the natural immune response and otherwise being inert. In non-sapient hosts, Asikat never stops being contagious, catching through ingestion or injection of bodily fluids. Asikat disintegrates harmlessly when away from living tissue, generally within 90 seconds.

In humans and other sapient creatures, the true nature of Asikat is revealed - it was designed as an enhancing agent, working on traits both present in the host's genetic code as well as their mental state to rewrite their form. Children that are infected do not manifest the disease until they develop psychologically - manifestation normally is triggered between the ages of 2 and 6.

In sapient creatures, Asikat has a long dormancy period, stretching between 2 and 6 weeks. During this time, the infection is contagious through direct transmission of bodily fluids. Since Asikat disintegrates when away from living tissue, transmission must happen in no more than 60 seconds. This has the interesting side-effect of making most blood transfusions safe, as long as one waits at least a minute. Conversely, a direct open-mouthed kiss transmits just as well as contact with an open wound.

The Asikat spends the incubation period analyzing its host's body and mental state, creating a model and a plan of action. Each plan of action is unique, based on the specific genetic combinations of the host, as well as the host's psychological profile. Then it starts "unzipping" its victim.

The period of Asikat infection called "unzipping" lasts anywhere from a day to a week, depending on the severity of the changes in the plan of action; the host stops being infectious during this time. Unzipping is an incredibly painful process, as the body is torn down and rebuilt over and over again. One third of all Asikat victims die during this stage, often halfway between various changes.

Approximately 3/4 of all Asikat survivors come out almost unscathed, their bodies changed in minor cosmetic ways (hair color, eye color, height, body type being the most common presentations) - while the rest have various sorts of more extreme modifications and deformities - strange, chimeric changes. Survivors of the Asikat are generally healthier than before - their body has been re-created, and all the abuse that was heaped on the previous version is no longer. In extreme cases, the Asikat can even reconstitute limbs. Furthermore, roughly one in seventeen Asikat survivors manifest gifts of various sorts, regardless of the changes in physical appearance.

In cases of pregnancy, things are more tragic. As the Asikat does not distinguish between mother and child, the raw material of any fetus is cannibalized for its plan of action. There appears to be a tendency for pregnant women to exhibit more extreme manifestations of Asikat transformations (both positive and negative), but more research is necessary.

Once the Asikat transformation is complete (resulting in either death or mutation), the infection subsides, but the victim remains contagious for the remainder of their lives. Generally speaking, Asikat victims are immune to further exposure, though there is the occasional exception (sufferers of cancer, AIDS, and herpes being the most well-known).

Only one in ten Asikat survivors remain fertile - but those that are fertile have a chance of passing on their gifts or other variations, and these seem likely to be dominant traits. Children of Asikat victims remain infected and contagious, but the Asikat does not recognize the child as a separate organism, so does not spark a new unzipping. It has been only two generations since the Asikat was first spread across the globe, but it is these children that will be its true legacy.

Asikat survivors are often known, in total, as "exotics" (or the more vulgar "unzipped"), although the unfortunate victims that wind up with pronounced deformities are often referred to by the unfortunate slur "freaks". Those with gifts are known, unsurprisingly, as "gifted".

In addition to humans, Asikat has become active in certain primates, and dolphins, producing gifted specimens of these species. Investigation into these incidents is ongoing.

"Inevitable."

That's what the doctor keeps saying. Any treatment I have for my brain tumor at this point is nothing more than a delaying tactic. Months, maybe years. It won't stop me from dying young, it just might make me die a little older.

"Inevitable." It can be cut down, but it will grow back. Eventually, it will grow back stronger, more aggressively. I can't realistically expect more than 15 years, and probably it will be less than ten.

I saw the MR Is?, the pictures of my head. The part of my brain they removed the first time is only a small portion of the entire tumor structure. More has to come out - this infestation has taken my entire left frontal lobe. And whether or not it comes out, I get to look forward to all sorts of fun symptoms, the worst being 'cognitive decline.'

I'm an intelligent, creative person. The things by which I define myself are all internal, cerebral. It is also the lens through which I view and interact with the world (which, for better or for worse, leads people to think I'm showing off, or trying to prove myself, when really I'm just exulting).

So to have the one part of my body - this horrible lump of flesh - that I consider ME... to have that attacked, and degraded, and torn apart, while the rest soldiers on as healthy as can be. To know that I might very well lose myself long before I die, I don't know what to do about it.

But really, there's really nothing I CAN do. It's incurable, it's inevitable. And it's untenable. So I have to live like there is no shadow, pretend that the inky blackness is sunlight. "Hope" is the watchword - not hope for survival, if I wanted false hope I'd still have religion. Instead, it's hope that I'll find value and meaning in the time I have left.

---

A big part of me is thinking "why bother" to the surgery. Any treatment is just a delaying tactic anyway - so, basically, my health insurance peoples (and me) are going to be shelling out massive amounts of money to, what, buy me a few more years? 2 years, 3?

The cost of the surgery and the various MR Is? and the like that I've gotten already are around $250,000. As I look back on my life and consider everything I've done, I wonder whether or not I can justify that, if I can look at the life I've led and say 'yes, that was worth a quarter of a million.' And, well, I can't.

So now I'm looking at possibly another surgery, which I can't imagine being any less expensive, and I wonder if I could possibly justify that cost in the 2, 6, 10 years I have left. And I think to myself, again, no, I can't. I won't. Even the threat of death doesn't seem to get me moving. There have got to be more deserving people to which a new chance at life could be given.

I don't see how I could be worth it. What have I done, or what might I do, that would make it worth it?

---

I feel stupid for ever putting money into a 401(k). I hate that my life is pretty much not going to have a 'retirement' stage.

I resent this sack of meat and bones for working perfectly well apart from the one part that has any meaning. Of course, I have even less reason to take care of it now.

I wonder why I'm continuing with school. It was one of my own delaying tactics, really - putting off living, escaping responsibilities. Maybe I should just sell my house, skip the country, and disappear.

I fear loneliness. My dating history speaks for itself - I don't have much to offer people, or I would most certainly not have extensive voids of emptiness.

In animals, Asikat is a benign infection, augmenting the natural immune response and otherwise being inert. In non-sapient hosts, Asikat never stops being contagious, catching through ingestion or injection of bodily fluids. Asikat disintegrates harmlessly in dead bodies.

Asikat only works on actively sapient creatures - thus, infected human children won't manifest until they reach a certain stage of psychological development. As children develop differently, this stage might happen anywhere from age 2 to age 6.

Only 1 out of 10 Asikat survivors remain fertile, but otherwise survivors of the Asikat are generally healthier than before - their body has been re-created, and all the abuse that was heaped on the previous version is no longer. In extreme cases, the Asikat can even reconstitute limbs.

Furthermore, roughly one in seventeen Asikat survivors manifest gifts of various sorts.

Furthermore, roughly one in seventeen Asikat survivors manifest gifts of various sorts, regardless of the changes in physical appearance. Only one in ten Asikat survivors remain fertile - but those that are fertile have a chance of passing on their gifts or other variations, and these seem likely to be dominant traits. It has been only two generations since the Asikat was first spread across the globe, but it is these children that will be its true legacy.

In cases of pregnancy, the Asikat does not appear to distinguish between mother and child, and the raw material of any fetus is cannibalized for its plan of action. There appears to be a tendency for pregnant women to exhibit more extreme manifestations of Asikat transformations (both positive and negative), but more research is necessary.
