Caust

Caust is a harsh world without much water (at least it's known extents). It's apparent that in previous ages there were great empires that dominated the world, but now these are mostly hidden by the sands. It's people now live in a state of barbarity, and war upon each other, and other local dangerous fauna, incessantly. Despite this, they often have quite intricate cultures that meld with the diverse creatures and settings of the world.

World Stats

  • Mercury 1 (ace of wands)
  • Venus 1 (knight of wands)
  • Mars 10 (ten of cups)
  • Jupiter 4 (four of swords)
  • Saturn 9 (nine of wands)

Gates: Kosmos, Tirene

Size: The area surrounding the cultures that are nearest the two gates is not quite 1 million square miles. Beyond this are vast uncharted deserts of unknown size, and varying types. It is rumored that there are other cultures far away, but it is not certain whether this is fact or simply legend.

Pictures of Caust

Festival Tree

Villagers light lanterns and hang them on a vaulcouisti tree in the village center. Despite the horrors of their world (or perhaps because of them), most of the peoples of Caust live a complex spiritual life. Rituals vary from tribe to tribe, but the lighting of the lanterns is something one sees in every village across Caust.

City of Pozis

The lizard-riders of the City of Pozis often take shelter under grand roots, all that remains of a once massive vaulcouisti tree into which the denizens have built their homes and businesses. Those nearest the sand are businesses that interact with traders, those higher up being the safer homes of the wealthy.

Not too far off from Pozis, atop a sandy rock outropping, is the gate to Kosmos. This was formerly the site of the majority of inter-world trade from Caust, but has become a secondary site since the path was found to Tirene near the U-Kait Monastary (see below). Mercenaries have always been the biggest export from Caust, followed by magical minerals of various sorts, and some culinary herbs.

Approaching the U-Kait Monastary

Even the monks need protection from those who would raid their place of worship, and so they like many others build high on the ubiquitous rock outcroppings that dot the landscape.

This particular monastary is not far from the gate to Tirene, which is embedded in a cliff-side. There are some small mines that have sprung up in other cliffs nearby that export magical minerals to Tirene in return for the usual (water).

Merchants on the Go

A clan of merchants maneuver their Kubba-beast along a canyon on their way to trade with a distant outpost. They keep an eye out for the cult known as the Ghouls. The cult came into existence lead by a fanatic who felt that emigrating from Caust to "weaker" worlds was degenerating the strenght of the people of Caust. Now these crazed desert wanderers seek to live on the flesh of their former brethren. The leaders of the cult are said to have strange powers.

Ruins

Storms are common on Caust, and flash flooding often causes massive erosion that may reveal the ruins of one of the many previously great cultures of the world. Artifacts from these ruins (often magical, since these survive longer than others) are important items for trade with other worlds. Such goods would be more common, were it not for the fact that some of the larger and more violent fauna on Caust find the cavernous ruins in question to be perfect places to shelter from the heat of the desert. This makes retrieving such artifacts dangerous to say the least.

Ancient Place Uncovered

Another ancient civilization comes to light as a massive sand mountain migrates off of taller portions of it.

Creative Defenses

Heights used again for defense. Rain catchment devices are only rarely useful as storms are very local. But best to catch all the water one can when it does fall.

Oasis Town

One of the more advanced settlements on Caust sits by one of the larger pools of open water known.

The Caust Burough on Kosmos

Far more advanced than any place on Caust itself, the people of the burough are much more cosmopolitan. To many of the people on Caust, the denizens of the burough seem soft or weak. They still retain their homeworld tradition of always going armed, however.

Merchants Scavenging Ivory

Profit can be had dealing with the resources provided by (often fallen) creatures of Caust. The logistics are, however, often nightmarish.

Riding Beasts

Riding beasts are a key to survival on Caust, and come in an amazing array of shapes and sizes, including gigantic. The larger such beasts are occasionally used as walking villages, as in the example above. Slightly smaller beasts are used as armored vehicles, in essence.

Warbeast Rider

Warbeasts are often painted with tribal colors.

Macro-fauna

Many of the creatures of Caust are massive, the more passive of them usually well-armored.

Violent Nature

Unfortunately many giant creatures of Caust are not at all Passive. The valiant warrior on the lower left managed to fend this creature off just long enough for his village to get to safety before he was eaten whole.

Meteor Storm

As if the creatures of Caust weren't enough, the environment is just as deadly. If a lack of water doesn't kill one, perhaps falling meteors will. Close passes of Mars tend to cause a lot of these. In the aftermath, however, the iron collected from these meteors can be beaten into rough swords possessed of dark magical radiance (such as the one below).
