God Spawn

Life is not enough to create intelligence, sapience. It needs that 'divine spark'. The Five Races were created with the divine spark. Otherwise, the only other beings with sapience are the children of the gods:

Dragons (Lasia and Kelytos)

These eternal majestic creatures, scaled and full of flame, are as hungry and greedy as the fire that dwells within them. Their caustic blood, a mix of the fire and water in their nature, consumes them from the inside. It also fuels the massive gouts of flame that the dragon can expel from its mouth.

With their sixth sense and sharp minds, Dragons can see the creations of sorcerers, and as a result are excellent and skilled wizards. Their long lives, and their perceptiveness, has made them a repository of wisdom.

Dragons are hermaphroditic - they all lay eggs - but they are not asexual, two dragons are necessary to create an egg. Unfortunately for the dragons, when Kelytos was murdered by Thakanae, his death cry curdled their eggs. Now, the only things that hatch from Dragon's eggs are the Naga. The Age of the Dragons is over - each Dragon that is killed is one more gone from the world.

It was the emergence of the Naga - fragile compared to the Dragons - and the negotiation talents of Stegan Karrather, the first Emperor of Vidon, that forged the alliance with the Dragons and convinced them to work with the Five Races, for the protection of the Naga.

  • Naga

The products of the curdled eggs of the Dragons are humanoids. Like Dragons, they have scaled skin, and they share the reptilian heads of their forebears. Unlike Dragons, they've lost the fire, and the associated hunger, though their blood is still caustic. They are cold-blooded, and will slow down when the temperature drops. It is winter when they drop their eggs, and summer when they start rutting. Like the Dragons, they are hermaphroditic.

Although the fires that allow the Dragons to fly have been snuffed in the Naga, they have vestigial wings jutting out of their backs. Unfortunately, they are even heavier than the Avalir; they cannot even glide. This is likely due to the heavy scales, and the bony skull, that they share with their forebears, and the prehensile whip tail jutting out of their backsides.

The Naga often decorate their wings to impress each other - ceremonial markings of rank. Since they don't generally notice weather, they usually don't "do" clothing.

Takan (Arista OR Phelan and Thakanae)

From Thakanae, the Takan have certain traits that breed through: they are all resistant to fire. They thrive in the sun, and slow down in the winter or in darkness. Each is also a shapeshifter - they have an animal form and a humanoid form. Phelan's children tend toward avians, Arista's tend toward beasts of the land.

They also can summon the fire to help them. They can surround themselves with a wreath of fire, when in animal form; and in human form, they can summon a weapon made of fire.

Phelan's children also have the Gift of Babel - they understand any language, either of beasts or Man. They also have the Third Eye (quite literally), which when opened allows them to see sorcery. And their memories are sharp; they remember anything they see.

Arista's children have the Tongue of the Ages, allowing them to speak to the rocks and the trees. They are also earth-blooded - even the most grievous wound will eventually heal.

Like Thakanae, the Takan are bound by oaths. Their society is built on the bartering of oaths and favors.

Trolls (Arista and Zareth)

trolls

Great Spiders (Beleth and humans)

Beleth visits people in their nightmares. Occasionally, they wake up pregnant. Nine months later, giant spiders eat their way out. Beleth is indiscriminate about gender, but women who undergo this process sometimes survive.

This only happens to humans.

Changelings (Phelan and The Five Races)

Phelan learned from Beleth. But instead of coming to people in their dreams, Phelan manifests in the physical world. Phelan's children are the Changelings, and can come from every race.

Changelings can change their faces and bodies at will; they are doppelgangers. They can adopt the special abilities of any of The Five Races, with an appropriate concentration of element. (Fire for khan, water for vanai, air for avalir, and so on)

Urgoi (Charisha and Rhayn)

urgo (can only inhabit humans or nonsapients)

Dolphins (Nyx and Vond)

dolphins

Outsiders (Lilith and Mahuatl)

traders

Sarap (Zareth and The Five Races)

snake-beings, elemental?

The Anthropic Principle

In this universe, there is an apparent tendency towards the stereotypical human form. The Five Races were all made "in the image" of one of the Celestials, and seemingly half these children of the Gods are anthropoid. The Takan, the Sarap, the Trolls... the Changelings too, though they perhaps don't count as they are also children of The Five Races. On the other hand, the Great Spiders come from humans, one of The Five Races - but of course, only from their dreams.

We can also see evidence of this in the Naga - the implication that the humanoid form lurks everywhere. When the dragons lost their essence, they also lost their shapes. Perhaps the tendency toward the human form is coupled with the divine spark of intelligence?

So far, the only completely nonhumanoid intelligences are: the Great Spiders, the Dolphins, the Outsiders. I'm not entirely sure about the ethereal Urgo and whether they can be considered humanoid or not.
