Magic Animals

Ecological Resources

Here we will find products of a magically-infused ecology, that have been domesticated or otherwise harvested by the native civilizations, as well as the uses that have been made for them. This page is fauna of all kinds; for flora, visit Magic Trees.

Major Animals

Wyvern (air/water) - The Wyvern looks like a Dragon, but is not. It is larger than a horse, and unlike a Dragon only has four limbs: two front wings, and two hind legs. Some live in wet climates - they adapt to almost any temperature, stalking tundras, wetlands, and rainforests. Some have been domesticated. Wyverns are the only flying steed.

Ellegon (water/fire) - The ellegon looks like a scaled buffalo, its head so large it can barely bring it up. It smells of sulfur, and smoke normally escapes its nostrils. Originally inhabitants of hot, wet climates, they are omnivores, and eating machines. Now most have been domesticated, and large cities use herds of them to take care of their garbage and sewage - as they will, literally, eat anything. In the wild, their thick hides protect them as they eat whatever they can find. They are no hunters.

Barghest (fire/night) - These look like large, black dogs, and can disappear almost completely in darkness. Due to their propensity to breathe fire, they are often called 'Hellhounds.' As adaptable as wolves, nobody's sure how many are wild and how many are domesticated. They are excellent trackers, and are used by hunters, the military, and guards.

Jugger (night/earth) The Jugger is the largest beast to roam the lands, but not by much - when standing upright, on its hind legs, it is twice as tall as an elephant. Apart from the occasional escape, there are no more in the wild - the entire species has been either domesticated or hunted to extinction. When it was wild, it preferred a nocturnal lifestyle, and in peacetime one often finds Jugger herds sleeping the day away. Juggers have huge claws on their front and back feet, large enough that it has to walk on the sides of its feet (giving it quite a swagger). Juggers also have a wide, muscular tail. They have massive, sharp teeth and hides thick enough to shrug off most bolter shots. They are omnivorous, eating whatever is placed in front of them - which tends to be a lot. They prefer spending time on their hind legs when moving around. A slaughtered Jugger provides enough food for a month. However, as a Jugger's flesh grows back surprisingly quickly, the manner of harvesting food from a Jugger does not normally require it to be slaughtered. Juggers are large (and sedentary) enough that meat can be sliced directly off their still-living bodies, and in peacetime, this is exactly what is done. Only when a Jugger has neared the end of its life, and is unable to regenerate as quickly as in its youth, is it then slaughtered. At that point, its hide, although little thicker than cattle leather, is tough enough to be fashioned into some of the best armors known (the hide of young Juggers is not so tough, making it easier to be cut into for the meat). In wartimes, most people go without Jugger meat, as they are mobilized for heavy cavalry. The same resilience that allows massive chunks of its flesh to be removed makes it a horror on the battlefield - not to mention its strong claws and thick hides. On the downside Juggers are notoriously difficult to control on a battlefield, and only their riders (called Juggernauts) are able to keep them from panicking. Thus, it is the goal of the opposite side to take out as many Juggernauts as possible, while protecting their own. The Juggernaut uniform includes armor made from Jugger-leather.

Giant Sandworm (earth/air) - Native to deserts and barren mountains, the Giant Sandworm is cultivated for its silk, which is stronger than the best steel in the world (though strong, it is balls for armor). It is a misnomer - the Sandworm is closer to a millipede than a worm. It is large enough to dwarf a human, though not a Jugger. Since they are native to mostly uninhabited areas, it is rare to find one in the wild; it is believed most are domesticated.
