Texias

(Texias is a word from the Red Men - Eastbackers often call it "Westback," a word that Texians have come to associate with 'greenhorns'.)
  • Virtue: The Fool (Freedom) - Texias is a land of freedom and unrestrained bounty.
  • Fault: The Hermit (Isolation) - The people of Texias have stumbled into their own identity. This has made them insular and disconnected.
  • Fate: Law - (Order vs. Disorder) - Texias is only lightly governed,
  • Usurper: The Gun (Coercion vs. Cooperation) - Although the gun was invented in Derange, and mastered in Eastback, it is Texias that has adopted the gun and integrated it into its identity. Upright, it reflects the coercion of the gun, the threat of force. Reversed it reflects cooperation and acquiescence, the solidarity of the Texian people.

Geography

Bordering Eastback to the east, Derange to the north, and the Mixed Lands to the south (along the Brave River), and the Lofty Mountains to the west. It also has a coast on the Carob Gulf, to the southeast. Texias is covered with wagon train spikes leading out from Derange and Eastback. It stretches from pleasant woodlands in the shadow of the Purple Mountains (and the marshlands south of that) to the deserts of the Big Bend in the shadow of the Rockmounts.

Politics

Texias is a pastiche. It is inhabited by a combination of Pale Folk from Eastback, Red Men from Derange, and Jaguar People from the Mixed Lands. The clash of these three cultures has given the Realm of Texias a strong identity and a pervasive sub-culture. The towns of Texias are an intriguing blend of Eastbacker customs and the faith of the Jaguar People - they pay close attention to its single Lord, the theandric Procellous - and almost every village has at least one duomo if not more.

A Margrave named August Coldstone has declared himself the Archduke of Texias, and makes his personal city (Dalehouse) the capital. He has organized a group of lawmen he calls 'Marshals' to help keep the peace; heading them is the Red Man named Sam Houston. This has not made the Dukes of the Unity Covenant very pleased, as they have invested a lot in the idea of westward expansion, which includes the territories of Texias. Despite his claims of faith, the theandric Procellous frowns on him from the Mixed Lands as well.
